Model AAC Use Every Day

One of the most effective ways to support someone using AAC is to model its use yourself. Use the communication device during everyday conversations to demonstrate how words and messages can be created. This helps build confidence and understanding without placing pressure on the individual to communicate.

Focus on Communication, Not Perfection

Communication is about sharing ideas, feelings and needs. Don't worry about perfect grammar, spelling or sentence structure. Encourage communication attempts and celebrate success rather than correcting mistakes.

Give Plenty of Time

Many AAC users need additional time to process information, find vocabulary and construct messages. Resist the temptation to fill silences or speak for them. Waiting a few extra seconds can make a significant difference.

Keep AAC Available at All Times

A communication device should be available whenever communication may occur. If a device is left charging in another room or packed away, opportunities for communication can be lost.

Make Communication Part of Everyday Life

Communication opportunities exist throughout the day, whether during meals, while shopping, watching television, playing games, going for walks, or visiting family and friends. The more opportunities a person has to communicate in meaningful, real-life situations, the more valuable and effective AAC becomes.

Don't Test – Communicate

Avoid constantly asking questions to check knowledge.

Instead of "What colour is that?"

Try "I like that blue car."

This encourages natural conversation rather than creating a test situation.

Communication Is More Than Requests

Many AAC users become highly skilled at requesting items and having their immediate needs met, but they often have fewer opportunities to comment, ask questions, tell stories, express opinions, and share personal experiences. Providing opportunities for a wider range of communication functions can help AAC users develop richer, more meaningful interactions and stronger communication skills.

Positioning Matters

For AAC to be effective, communication devices should be positioned so they can be accessed comfortably, efficiently, and consistently throughout the day. Factors such as seating position, mounting solutions, screen visibility, and the efficiency of the chosen access method should all be carefully considered, as poor positioning can significantly reduce communication success and increase fatigue and frustration.

Support Communication in School and at Home

Consistency is essential for successful AAC use. Where possible, the same vocabulary organisation should be maintained across settings, communication strategies should be shared between environments, and everyone involved should understand how the system works. Effective collaboration between AAC users, families, carers, educators, and professionals often leads to better communication outcomes and greater long-term success.

Technology should be used as a tool to help people connect with others and participate more fully in their communities. Exploring opportunities for text messaging, video calls, social media, online gaming, and group activities can create valuable social interactions and meaningful communication experiences.
